Invaders and Settlers

This period covers the time from the Roman Invasion, in AD 43, to the Norman Conquest of 1066.

Before the Norman Conquest British society was shaped by the movement and settlement of different peoples - the Romans, Anglo Saxons and Vikings all left their mark. The landscape holds visible clues to their presence and place names sometimes give clues to our earliest settlers. (These can sometimes be seen by looking at Google Earth)

The road known today as the A5 follows the route of the Roman road (Watling Street) and formed the basis of the boundary between the Anglo Saxons and Vikings. Anglo Saxon architecture can be seen in a variety of churches across the county, such as All Saint's Church in both Brixworth and Earl's Barton

Places to visit include Prebendal Manor and Piddington Roman Villa.
