Prehistory - Before the written word

This period covers the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age, the time before the Romans pre- 43AD.

The Timeline extends back into prehistory to encourage the understanding that people were living in Britain at the time of the Egyptians (and before). Perhaps the best use of this section is to draw parallels elsewhere. The earliest Egyptians, the Great Pyramids and Stone Henge parallel the time when Briar Hill (3500 BC) was in use. Hunsbury Hill Fort is contemporary with the Greek Philosophers, Socrates and Plato, and was within a generation of the Parthenon being built.

Most of what we know from this period in history is from the work of archaeologists and there are loan packs available from the Northamptonshire Archaeology Unit. The Sites and Monuments Record is also a good source of information for the early history of our county.
