1011AD Northamptonshire recorded
as the county of Ham Tunn
The first written reference to Northampton is in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle which records the county of 'Ham Tunn'.

A thousand years ago, the boundaries were different from our county boundaries today. Names of places change over time but we can still see earlier origins in some names today.

The photographs show excavations and reconstruction drawings. It is through the work of archaeologists that we have a better picture of what late Saxon Northampton looked like.
