1605AD Gunpowder Plot planned
at Ashby St Ledgers
Remember, Remember, the fifth of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot

This is the start of a childhood nursery rhyme which is often quoted as the 'guy' is thrown on the bonfire at the beginning of November each year.

More than 400 years ago, there was a Catholic Plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Guy Fawkes is the person most people remember, but the leader of the plotters was Robert Catesby. Ashby St Ledgers was the family home of the Catesbys. It was not Robert's main home, but its location was convenient for friends and family and many details of the plot were worked out here.
