Archibald was a member of the East India Trading Company and Caroline had to live where her husband was stationed (sent). Caroline was first lived in India, where she was disturbed by the conditions of poverty. She decided to take action, educating street children in the hope of giving them better prospects and hopefully paid employment. In 1838 she moved to Australia, where she did most of her humanitarian work, improving conditions for immigrants.

She worked in the colonies for many years so she is better known in Australia, than in Britain. In 2004 a school in Northamptonshire decided to name their new school Caroline Chisholm School, in recognition of the work of this fascinating 19th humanitarian.
