1910AD Walter Tull Transfers to
Northampton Football Club
Walter Tull was one of Britain's first black professional footballers and played for Northampton Town. He was also the first British black officer, serving in the First World War.

Tull signed for Tottenham Hotspur in 1908; he was the league's first outfield player and became famous for his skill. In a game at Bristol City, however, the fans racially abused him. The incident deeply affected him and in the next season he only played three first-team games.

The following season he was sold for a heavy transfer fee to Northampton Town. Tull became their biggest star, playing 110 first-team games for the club.

When the war broke out, like many other professional footballers, Tull enlisted in the 17th (1st football) Battalion of the Middlesex regiment. In 1916, Tull was made sergeant. Tull will be remembered for being at the first Battle of the Somme in France. Tull was killed on 25 March 1918 in no-man's land near Favreuil. He was only 29 years old.
