1917AD Bassett Lowke moves into 78 Derngate
the 'Mackintosh House'
The Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh did his last major house design in Northampton, for the owner of the model making company, Bassett-Lowke.

78 Derngate in Northampton is known as the 'Mackintosh House' after Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a talented architect from Glasgow. The house was originally built in 1820. In 1916 Mackintosh was asked to remodel the house for its new owner Wenman Joseph Bassett Lowke, a local model maker and engineer.

This was the last house design Rennie Mackintosh did, working in a bold new style, using primary colours and geometric motifs. It is Mackintosh's only major commission outside Scotland.
