At this time most of the county was covered in forest. People chose to live close to natural resources such as rivers.
Aerial photographs still show traces of this ancient landscape. Finds such as pottery, axe and arrow heads give more clues as to where people lived.
The picture on the red back ground shows grave goods from a barrow at Warmington. The other three pictures are from the excavation of a round barrow at West Cotton.
The man was found in a shallow grave in the centre of the West Cotton round barrow. He was buried in a crouched position, with his knees drawn up to his chest. By his feet was a decorated pottery urn (or 'beaker'), a flint dagger and a large circular 'button' made from a type of smooth black stone called jet. The picture shows details of the dagger. The notches gripped cords to bind the dagger on a handle, perhaps made of wood.
