The Pride of Northampton is a celebration of the history, arts and culture of the town of Northampton, a reminder of its proud heritage and the positive future that lays before it. Artists were commissioned by a range of sponsors to paint, decorate and adorn each 5ft sculpture of a lion, making it into a unique work of art. These sculptures were then placed all around the town of Northampton, encourage people to come and visit the town and also encourage its residents to rediscover the unique sites that the town has to offer.
Lions have long held a symbolic connection with the town of Northampton and the county as a whole. Two lions appear on the town crest, they are a symbol of power and authority and echo Northampton Castle's early role as the seat of parliament in the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries. Lions also feature on the family coat of arms of the Franklin family, who were originally from Northampton and were later one of the founding families of the United States of America.
If you would like to find out more about the lions, please visit the Pride of Northampton website for more information.
